Far too many pets end up unwanted in
animal shelters because they are misunderstood and labelled problem dogs by well
intended but uninformed owners. These owners were unable to fix common
problems such as pulling on leash,
charging at the door, jumping
on people, not staying or
coming when called, getting out of control around other dogs including both
excitability and aggression, and any other forms of unwanted
behaviour.
As Cesar Millan said:“If
you give only 80 percent leadership, your dog will give you 80 percent
following. And the other 20 percent of the time he will run the show. If you
give your dog any opportunity for him to lead you, he will take it.” While
Cesar may not be a dog trainer, these are certainly words to live by. A happy,
well balanced dog has good pack structure within his home and is taught what is
expected of him. Once you have structure and obedience many of the problem
issues take care of themselves, including fear, and shyness. This is due to the
fact that your dog is no longer forced to lead, giving him confidence that
you’ve got it covered. Unfortunately what people don’t realize is
that attending an obedience class teaches much more than sit, down, stay. A
good obedience class also teaches your dog to behave, both in the house, and
around other dogs. More than that, it teaches you how to have a good
relationship with your dog.
